Spring is in the air…

Spring is definitely in the air in the part of the world where I live here in New Zealand. There are lambs on my morning walk, daffodils under the blossoming trees in the orchard and the days are getting longer. This morning as I was getting ready to go to work I heard a pair of Paradise Ducks honking outside and I thought to myself - everyone is busy! The birds are busy, the bees are getting busy, the farm animals - the plants. I suddenly felt a sense of overwhelm about all the things I have to do this month. Who knows that feeling? It can be paralysing as we think of all the things that need to be done as well as all the other things going on in our lives.

For some of us that leads to complete inaction - paralysis - as we think of the big jobs ahead of us. We tap out and end up doing nothing. This is not just this season of course - there are often times in our lives where we face huge challenges. Procrastination is another symptom of that.

But we do have to remember this. we don’t have to do it all and we don’t have to do it all at once. We can do one bit at a time. Even if it is one tiny bit - one small step for you. Sometimes the. big picture is too much - but if we can break it down into wha the can do today, then that makes it possible. Grandma always used to say - Grace sufficient for the day. Most of us can do what’s in front of us. We might not be able to comprehend the whole thing - but we can deal with a little bit at a time. Then tomorrow another little bit. And another.

I call this the Tortoise Method and it’s the basis of the book I wrote for yoyo dieters, those repeat offenders in the diet department who keep trying new diets but never getting to their goals. That can also be a huge challenge but I encourage my clients to do it one step at a time. One day at time. So apply that method to you day today. What is something you can manage to do today? Then do it and keep building on that. You will get there. It might be one small step for you - but if you build on it, you can create big results.
